The ruined city of Nan Madol stands on the east coast of the island of Ponhpei, halfway between Honolulu and Manila, in the Federated States of Micronesia. According to the anthropologist William Ayres, of the University of Oregon, the metropolis was the capital of the Saudeleur dynasty, which exercised its power in the area between the years 500 and 1500.
